This book and associated exhibition, represents a certain kind of expansive potential for Burris' work. Each of the works contained within these pages is designed to grow and expand. They are not the products of short-term vision but well-polished models intended for expanded installations and bodies of work. The Lonely Mountain Community Center has a never-ending energy that allows it to alter its scale, content and aesthetic at will. The cultural ephemera being created by the Stoner Creek Boys can continue to evolve into an infinite number of physical incantations further adding to their myth. The Mountain Top Removal Protestors can grow into a full-fledged army of opposition, fighting for their cause in large numbers. Their armed opposition will obviously augment their own forces in response. We Will Someday, Someday We Will is full of potential energy and challenges all of us to engage with our larger community and become a part of the ongoing debates that will shape our future. Someday is not as far off, as it seems.

. . . so I took one of those little tabs off the Hauling and Yard Work flier at the Community Center, and I called the number and it was a message machine that picked up so I left my number. Then about 7 that night I get a call and I have no idea whose number it is and I almost don’t answer but I can’t stand the phone ringing and not answering it, so I did, and it was this really deep voice and the guy said

Voice Two: Marvin
. . . you call about some Hauling and Yard Work? I got some time this Thursday and a coupla mornin’s next week. Busy time of year for haulin’, ya know? And I got this computer class two times a week down at Linz Valley so I got homework. Tryin to get the hang of X-L or whatever they call it so I can make out bills for my jobs. So anyway. Call me back and let me know if you want haulin’ or yard work. Yard work I got more time for so just call me and tell me what you need done. OK. Got a beep. Gotta get this. So call me ok?

Voice One: Suze
. . . and he sounded so you know MANLY. I mean I could just picture him sweaty and hauling stuff and with that voice O –M – G!!! I cannot believe he wants me to call him!! Seriously, like I have had guys in bars and stuff give me their numbers and say CALL ME. And once in Sav-a-Lot, this guy came up to me and said

. . . I’m sorry to bother you but I just had to tell you that you have the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen? Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend? A girl as fine as you should not be single. Hold up – you got a girlfriend? That’s cool. I mean, I’m totally cool with that, you know? I mean I could have some of that too, you know? It’s cool. Is your girl as fine as you are?

. . . seriously? I mean, seriously? I’m like, I do not have a girlfriend. There was this girl I saw once that was so gorgeous I mean total babe gorgeous and she was just walking around like a regular person, real nice, talking to people and all, and I was like, she is SO gorgeous. But hello, I don’t think Brother Harley is gonna take well to me bringing a girl to Revival even if she is a total babe. I can just hear him now

Welcome to our autumn 2010 Lonely Mountain Community Center Email Newsletter!

Due to the circumstances of our sad and troublesome summer it’s been a while since our last email newsletter. I’m sure you all have been aware of the turmoil and stresses placed upon us. I want to thank all of you who have supported us throughout this most difficult period. Every one of you should understand that we are here to support our entire community in the ways we always have but due to the nature of our situation there have been many changes made.

First it needs to be said that LMCC is here for all of us but we also need to say that we failed to stay together in light of our differences between those who are in favor of Mountaintop Removal and those opposed to it. For years as you all know we struggled to hold on as a community center with these differing points of view and hoped we could still come together and share but in the end the forces which pulled and provoked proved to be just too much. Mostly people on both sides really wanted to work together but it has to be said there were some bad apples that made this close to impossible. It isn’t so simple as to say “those of opposed to Mountaintop Removal” or “those of us for Mountaintop Removal” but in general those not opposed have begun their own community center near 3 Forks. Currently they are sharing space with Heritage Baptist and will have many of the same great services we have here, including After School and a Clinic. For a while they will be sharing our gym for basketball and for other things as well. Like I said this is still a great community and there is still lots of goodwill between us!

Basketball: Speaking of basketball both the Junior Miner boys and girls team did a terrific job in summer in league play and especially in the annual Linz Valley Southern Mountain District 2-AA Summer Basketball Shootout Tournament. You know (ahem) we don’t like braggin’ on our basketball teams but if you want to know how we did just take a peek at the trophy case. Special shout-outs to girls team Captain Mysty Rader and their Coach, Connie “Hawk” Hawkins and to boys team Captain Doug Sneigle and our new boys coach “Heb Brunner” of Burton Lumber! Also thanks to all the great and supportive parents and volunteers- we are basketball blessed!

Crazy Quilters
Jan tells us the “bee” theme for October and November is “Autumnal Glow” so bring in all those fall color fabric swatches and join us for our community crazy quilt, quilting bee every Tuesday night from 6:00pm- 9:00pm. Cost is $5.00 with snacks provided and quilt will be auctioned for charity. This is in our Arts and Crafts Shoppe (used to be rm. 3B)

You are welcome to use the computers and printer, remember the computer next to the sliding door has an internet connection. Michelle Toomey is our media expert and much thansls to her for posting information on both our blog and Facebook for us. In October she will have a class every Monday from 7:00pm- 8:30 about getting started on Facebook.

On Friday the 19th Don’t miss our “6th Annual Allnighter” that’s right- we’ll have snacks, special activities, live music with a performance by Dale “Son” Yarborough formerly of the Stoner Creek Boys and a barnyard scavenger hunt- it all goes til 6am! LMCC just received a generous project grant from the Puffin Foundation which will enable us to commission Kentucky writer Ruthie Maslin to create a narrative from one of the flyers on our bulletin board. The narrative will be performed when LMCC visits Thunder-Sky inc. in Cincinnati this Oct. Here Ruthie Maslin is seen receiving the check. Now get to work Ruthie!

As promised- Meg Stenner's Short Bread Cookie Recipe

Ingredients: brown sugar,1 egg, (6 oz.) butter,(8 oz.) 4 tbsp. light cream,1/2tbsp. almond extract, (1 lb. 3 oz.) flour,1 tbsp. baking powder, 2 tbsp. ground cardamom
Bake:
1.mix all ingredients together 2. knead the dough and roll into a ball 3.wrap in waxed paper put in refrigerator for 6 hours 4. slice the dough, shape and put on a buttered pan 5. bake in a preheated (400° F) oven for 12 minutes or until done. 6. take out of oven let cool, and store in a metal tin.

We have lost a beloved community member from various complications. "Time" was loved, he was a good provider for his family. He was best known as the Co- Captain of the Linz Valley HS Basketball Team that was District 11A Champs in 1971 and 1973 which crushed Black Creek in the playoffs both years! "Time" worked for Hanover Energy and was a volunteer bassketball and baseball coach here at Lonely Mountain Community Center until just recently.

From: Someday is today: Burris exhibit engages politics, social justice

Burris has a knack for pointing out the obvious. His work generates power in part through its ability to highlight things we all live among yet at the same time are ignorant of. Through his swindly text and drawings, he crafts a picture of contemporary life, some of it so based in fiction that it is penetratingly real.
Take for instance the Lonely Mountain Community Center, a bulletin board covered in fliers announcing Stoner Creek Boys performances, the start of a meth support group, memorial services for legend-in-his-day (this day being over 30 years ago) local basketball star Summer “Time” McNeese. One particularly poignant notice says, “Feeling unsafe? Call 911.” The 911 is scratched through and underneath it someone has pointed out what being forgotten feels like: We don’t have 911 jerk.
As one patron said on opening night, “I can’t tell if this is for real or not.”
Are the fliers real fliers, posted by citizens of the Lonely Mountain Community? Probably not. But are the issues illustrated on them real to citizens of Appalachia? To us? Absolutely.
It is scathing and oddly enjoyable to have your ignorance pointed out to you in the creative, sometimes funny, sometimes stereotypical, always decorative way Burris does it. That’s the beauty of his work.

Burris' sculptures, drawings, paintings and installation pieces use humor, irony and parody to comment on and raise questions about community dynamics and cultural stereotypes. He wants his art to promote activism and awareness of regional issues including poverty and mountaintop-removal coal mining. His art isn't intended as decoration; he wants it to make viewers think.
One piece, Welcome to Lonely Mountain Community Center, is a bulletin board filled with fictional news and notices that speak to issues, concerns and cultural conflicts in contemporary small-town Appalachia.
Burris is as much a storyteller as an artist. He densely weaves words and messages into his paintings and drawings, some of which are reminiscent of funk-art album covers from the 1970s.
"What really carries the work is this text," Jones said. "He's dealing with the very problems we're dealing with every day. These are serious issues, but he deals with them in a visually lighthearted way to get people into them."

PJ: Your show at Institute 193 is your first exhibition in ten years – are you excited or nervous?
BB: I wouldn’t say that I am particularly nervous. In my view, a lot of this work is about things I hope to expand and take outside of the region. The bulletin board installation, in particular, has the capacity to grow and evolve both in scope and scale. The piece functions as a self-contained community center. Writers come in and perform with the material. School groups can join in. I would like for it to grow and sponsor events, soccer teams, stream clean ups. It’s about empowering people to create and support activity in all its forms.
PJ: Wait… How can an art piece sponsor anything?
BB: Why not? Depending on the particular format of the show, this piece could grow into anything related to the larger community in which it appears. I have spent most of my life working in community centers and have seen things evolve quickly into projects, events, sponsorships, whatever…

One work that will be included in this exhibit is the Lonely Mountain Community Center bulletin board. The artwork consists of an actual bulletin board covered in flyers, such as one would expect to find in a rural community center. Flyers for basketball clinics and school theatrical production, hang beside flyers promoting temp agencies and pro-coal concerts.

Bruce’s intention is that the “piece also acts in effect as a community center — it sponsors actual fishing tournaments, stream clean-ups, and so on. As it is exhibited at various art centers and galleries, people are invited to respond in various ways to theinformation on the board.” During the opening reception on January 14, poet Eric Sutherland will perform a piece related to the content on the bulletin board.

Welcome to LMCC's April 2008 "email newsletter" We all know its been a bad weather winter. Lots of snow days which is good for the kids but it means that the last day of school this year is May 29th so we will be moving our summer day camp start back to June 9th. We're still looking for counselors so get in touch with Millie Wright if you are interested. More on the entire summer program in next months newsletter.

Probably the biggest frustration over the winter weather was in having to cancel the Linz Southern Mountain District 2-AA Basketball Tournament this March. Both the girls and boys teams (the Junior Miners) did great all season long and were really looking forward for a chance to show off a bit during the tourney. Special thanks to girls coach Connie Hawk Hawkins and boys coach Pete Smiles Smothers!

Speaking of basketball, we get a lot of great comments about our newly remodeled gym- its a great facility and its open to everyone on Sundays 1pm- 8pm. (other times too- check schedule) Once again our thanks to 'Heb' Brunner and 'Chick' at Burton Lumber!

You know its difficult up here when there's so many of us here dependent on the coal and we know we don't have any real new jobs to replace the coal jobs but our mountains cannot ever recover from what we are doing to them and this is a tough thing as its knocking us against each other. This is just to let everybody know that Lonely Mountain Community Center belongs to all of us and when we are here we all have to get along. Anyways enough preachin' for now- here's the news!

Don't miss our speaker former Western Mountain Valley Wrestling Federation Champ, Derrick "Smokin" Samuelson who will speak on Fouled Up But Forgiven his personal story about his famous life and the perils and the ways he was diverted from his own true path and how he found his way back home and was forgiven. Afterwards he will answer questions, sign autographs and socialize and take on all "commers" in a Death Match haw haw- jus kiddin!
